Straw Bale HouseThis is what has been occupying almost all of my 'free' time for the past year or so.Designed by myself, drawn on a CAD package by myself, Engineering Cert done by a friend (Thanks again Brad). Built by Larry Charles (builder extraordinaire) & myself, plastered by Passchier Plastering (Cheers Dirk) & myself (master plaster mixer). The house itself is an in-fill straw bale house. It has 2 bedrooms, and a large central living area. There is a concrete foundation wall all around the house which provides support for the t&g red beech floor. The roof is long run iron over purlins on rafters, insulated with wool batts on the ceiling & under the floor, and has a cedar t&gv cathedral style ceiling. There is a 1.8m veranda all the way around the outside, which is dropped below the inside floor level, allowing a single pitch roof. This protects the walls from rain in two ways, by not having a roof join above the walls, and by coming down lower than is normal for a verandah roof. All the glass is double glazed sliding windows. Most of the beams in the roof are NZ oregon, with the main ridge beam a very heavy laminated beam. Plans include a proper air-con system, working in conjunction with a heat exchanger to use the heat in the air going out, to heat the air coming in, instant gas hot water, external shutters, and computer control of most everything. Cat5 abounds. These images are in no particular order, click on a thumbnail to view the full-size image.
